Indication
Treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and maintenance of haemostasis in bleeding ulcers.
Dosage (summary)
40 mg IV once daily for erosive reflux oesophagitis; 80 mg bolus for bleeding ulcers followed by 8 mg/hour infusion.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Caution in pregnancy; not recommended during breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Clopidogrel
- Warfarin
- Atazanavir
- Nelfinavir
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir and atazanavir
Common side effects
- Headache
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
Counselling Points
- Monitor for signs of hypomagnesaemia
- Avoid use with certain antiretrovirals
- Report any unusual skin reactions

- Risk of gastrointestinal infections
- Hypomagnesaemia
- Increased risk of fractures
