Indication

Symptomatic relief of acute and chronic non-specific diarrhoea.

Dosage (summary)

5 ml per 12.5 kg body mass; max 15 ml per 12.5 kg daily.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • P-glycoprotein inhibitors
  • CYP3A4 inhibitors

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to loperamide
  • Infants < 24 months
  • Acute dysentery
  • Acute ulcerative colitis
  • Bacterial enterocolitis

Common side effects

  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache

Counselling Points

  • Stop if no improvement in 48 hours
  • Hydration is crucial in diarrhoea
  • Use caution when driving or operating machinery

Serious warnings

  • Risk of toxic megacolon in AIDS patients
  • Monitor for CNS toxicity in hepatic impairment
