Indication

Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.

Dosage (summary)

Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset of action typically occurs within 1 to 2 hours; duration of effect may last up to 24 hours.

Special Populations

  • Elderly patients
  • Patients with renal impairment
  • Patients with hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as it is not known if moxifloxacin is excreted in human milk.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum may reduce the absorption of moxifloxacin.
  • Iron supplements may decrease the effectiveness of moxifloxacin.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or any of the excipients in the formulation.
  • History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use.

Common side effects

  • Ocular discomfort
  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eye
  • Dry eye
  • Conjunctival hyperemia

Counselling Points

  • Instruct patients to wash hands before applying eye drops.
  • Advise patients not to touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
  • Inform patients to complete the full course of therapy even if symptoms improve.

Serious warnings

  • Caution in patients with a history of seizures.
  • May cause temporary blurred vision; advise patients not to drive or operate machinery until vision is clear.
