Indication
Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at high risk of fracture.
Dosage (summary)
One 70 mg tablet taken orally once weekly, preferably on the same day each week.
Onset of Action / Duration
Effects on bone mineral density may be observed after 3 to 6 months of treatment.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with renal impairment
- Patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus or nursing infant.
Key Drug Interactions
- Antacids may reduce absorption; separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
- Calcium supplements may interfere with absorption; take at different times.
- NSAIDs may increase the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to alendronate or any component of the formulation.
- Esophageal abnormalities that delay esophageal emptying.
- Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes.
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 35 mL/min).
Common side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia).
- Musculoskeletal pain.
- Hypocalcemia.
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw (rare).
