    Indication

    Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men at high risk of fractures.

    Dosage (summary)

    The recommended dose is 35 mg taken orally once a week.

    Onset of Action / Duration

    Effects on bone density may be observed after 3 to 6 months of treatment.

    Special Populations

    • Elderly patients
    • Patients with renal impairment
    • Patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    Risedronate sodium is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus or infant.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium may interfere with absorption.
    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may increase gastrointestinal irritation.

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to risedronate sodium or any of the excipients.
    • Patients with hypocalcemia.
    • Patients with severe renal impairment.

    Common side effects

    • Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain)
    • Musculoskeletal pain
    • Headache
    • Dizziness
    • Osteonecrosis of the jaw (rare)

    Counselling Points

    • Take the tablet first thing in the morning with a full glass of water.
    • Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking the tablet.
    • Ensure adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
    • Report any unusual thigh, hip, or groin pain to your healthcare provider.
