Indication
Management of mild to moderate pain, including dysmenorrhea, and for the treatment of inflammatory conditions.
Dosage (summary)
The usual adult dose is 500 mg initially, followed by 250 mg every 6 hours as needed. Maximum daily dose should not exceed 2000 mg.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset of action is typically within 1 hour, with a duration of effect lasting up to 6-8 hours.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with renal impairment
- Patients with hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Mefenamic Acid is contraindicated during the third trimester of pregnancy. Use during the first and second trimesters should be avoided unless clearly needed. It is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised.
Key Drug Interactions
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding with anticoagulants and other NSAIDs.
- May enhance the effects of antihypertensive medications.
- Caution with concomitant use of lithium, as NSAIDs may increase lithium levels.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid or any component of the formulation.
- Active peptic ulcer disease.
- History of gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation related to previous NSAID therapy.
- Severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Common side effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation).
- Dizziness or headache.
- Rash or other allergic reactions.
- Increased liver enzymes.
Counselling Points
- Take with food or milk to reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose.
- Report any signs of gastrointestinal bleeding (e.g., black stools, vomiting blood).
- Inform healthcare provider of any other medications being taken.
