Indication
Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of designated microorganisms in the following conditions: intra-abdominal infections, meningitis, pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.
Dosage (summary)
The recommended dosage for adults is 500 mg to 1 g administered intravenously every 8 hours, depending on the severity of the infection and renal function.
Onset of Action / Duration
The onset of action is typically within 30 minutes to 1 hour after intravenous administration.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Meropenem should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether meropenem is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administering to nursing mothers.
Key Drug Interactions
- Probenecid may increase the plasma concentration of meropenem.
- Concurrent use with other nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of renal toxicity.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to meropenem or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics.
