Indication

Sedation in ICU and monitored anaesthesia care.

Dosage (summary)

Loading: 1.0 mcg/kg over 10 mins; Maintenance: 0.2-0.7 mcg/kg/hr.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Renal impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not recommended in pregnancy; excreted in breast milk.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to dexmedetomidine
  • Sepsis
  • Unstable trauma
  • Hypovolaemia
  • Heart block
  • Uncontrolled cardiac failure
  • Imminent hepatic failure
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Common side effects

  • Hypotension
  • Bradycardia
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Hypoxia

Counselling Points

  • Avoid driving after sedation
  • Monitor for irritability in breastfed infants

Serious warnings

  • Continuous monitoring required
  • Risk of respiratory depression
  • Not suitable for general anaesthesia induction
