Indication

Treatment of major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Dosage (summary)

Initial dose of 12.5 mg once daily, may be increased to 25 mg once daily based on clinical response.

Onset of Action / Duration

Therapeutic effects may be observed within 2 to 4 weeks of treatment initiation.

Special Populations

  • Elderly patients
  • Patients with hepatic impairment
  • Patients with renal impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Paroxetine is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.

Key Drug Interactions

  • MAO inhibitors
  • Other serotonergic drugs
  • Warfarin
  • NSAIDs
  • Alcohol

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to paroxetine or any component of the formulation
  • Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Use in patients with a history of serotonin syndrome

Common side effects

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Somnolence
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth
  • Sexual dysfunction

Counselling Points

  • Take the medication at the same time each day, with or without food.
  • Do not abruptly discontinue the medication without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Report any unusual mood changes or suicidal thoughts immediately.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.

Serious warnings

  • Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults.
  • May cause withdrawal symptoms if discontinued abruptly.
  • Monitor for signs of serotonin syndrome, especially when combined with other serotonergic agents.
