Indication
Local anaesthetic for infiltration and field block anaesthesia.
Dosage (summary)
0.5-1.0% solution; max 300 mg/24 hours.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Children
- Patients with hepatic impairment
- Patients with renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Crosses placenta; avoid in early pregnancy. Small amounts in breast milk.
Key Drug Interactions
- Additive effects with other local anaesthetics
- Increased risk of dysrhythmia with QT-prolonging drugs
- Reduced clearance with beta-blockers and cimetidine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to lidocaine
- Heart block
- Bradycardia
- Hypovolaemia
- Myasthenia gravis
Common side effects
- Hypotension
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Allergic reactions
Counselling Points
- Avoid driving until normal function is restored
- Report any unusual symptoms immediately
Serious warnings
- Risk of systemic toxicity if administered intravenously
- Caution in patients with epilepsy or congestive heart failure
