Indication
Epilepsy, acute mania in bipolar disorder, migraine prophylaxis.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 600-2600 mg/day in divided doses; Children: 15-40 mg/kg/day.
Special Populations
- Children under 3 years
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Contraindicated in pregnancy; effective contraception required for women of childbearing potential.
Key Drug Interactions
- Increased sedation with phenobarbitone
- Decreased phenytoin levels
- Increased zidovudine toxicity
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to valproic acid
- Active liver disease
- Porphyria
- Mitochondrial disorders
