Dosage (summary)

Insert one ring vaginally, replace every 28 days.

Special Populations

  • Paediatric population
  • Post-menopausal women

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Limited safety data in pregnancy; benefits vs risks should be considered. Dapivirine is excreted in breast milk; low infant exposure expected.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Vaginal miconazole
  • Vaginal clotrimazole

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to dapivirine or excipients
  • Unknown or positive HIV status

Common side effects

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vulvovaginal pruritus
  • Vulvovaginitis
  • Pelvic pain

Counselling Points

  • Use consistently and replace every 28 days
  • Check for HIV status regularly
  • Use additional preventive measures during menses

Serious warnings

  • Not always effective in preventing HIV-1 infection
  • Risk of HIV resistance with undetected HIV-1 infection
