Indication
Control of generalized tonic-clonic and complex partial seizures.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 100 mg three times daily, maintenance 300-400 mg daily, max 600 mg.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 7-10 days for therapeutic levels.
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy; may cause congenital abnormalities. Avoid breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- St. John's Wort
- Alcohol
- CYP2C9/10 inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Cardiac function impairment
- Porphyria
Common side effects
- Gingival hyperplasia
- Dizziness
- Nystagmus
Counselling Points
- Take with water after meals
- Monitor for skin reactions
- Avoid alcohol and St. John's Wort
Serious warnings
- Risk of SJS/TEN
- Suicidal ideation
- Abrupt withdrawal may precipitate status epilepticus
