Indication

Treatment of resistant plasmodium falciparum malaria and muscle relaxant for myotonia.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 300-600 mg at night for cramps; 600 mg every 8 hours for malaria for 7 days.

Special Populations

  • Patients with myasthenia gravis
  • Patients with serious heart disease

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use in pregnancy is not contraindicated due to malaria risks.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Mefloquine may increase side effects and seizures

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to quinine
  • Tinnitus
  • Optic neuritis
  • Myasthenia gravis

Common side effects

  • Cinchonism
  • Tinnitus
  • Nausea
  • Visual disturbances

Counselling Points

  • Take at night for cramps
  • Report any visual disturbances
  • Avoid in myasthenia gravis

Serious warnings

  • Risk of seizures with mefloquine
  • Monitor for QT prolongation
