Indication
Treatment of partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children from 1 month.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: Initial 600 mg/day in 2 doses; maintenance 600-2400 mg/day. Children: 8-10 mg/kg/day.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
May cause serious birth defects; not recommended during breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Hormonal contraceptives may be ineffective
- CYP2C19 substrates may have increased plasma levels
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oxcarbazepine or excipients
Common side effects
- Somnolence
- Dizziness
- Hyponatremia
- Rash
Counselling Points
- Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity
- Use non-hormonal contraception
- Do not abruptly discontinue
Serious warnings
- Risk of serious skin reactions
- Risk of seizure aggravation
- Hyponatremia monitoring required
