Indication

For improving glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Dosage (summary)

5 mg once daily, with or without food.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset: 1.5 hours, Duration: >100 hours

Special Populations

  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Elderly

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Ritonavir
  • Rifampicin
  • Sulphonylureas

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to linagliptin
  • History of pancreatitis

Common side effects

  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Nasopharyngitis
  • Cough

Counselling Points

  • Take at the same time each day
  • Monitor blood glucose levels
  • Report signs of pancreatitis

Serious warnings

  • Risk of pancreatitis
  • Bullous pemphigoid
  • Rhabdomyolysis
