Indication
Severe hypertension and controlled hypotension during anaesthesia.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: IV bolus 50 mg, max 200 mg; infusion 20 mg/hour, may increase.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 5 mins, Duration: 6-18 hours
Special Populations
- Hepatic impairment
- Renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use with caution; may affect fetus and is excreted in breast milk.
Key Drug Interactions
- NSAIDs
- Calcium antagonists
- Adrenaline
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to labetalol
- Asthma
- Heart block
- Uncompensated heart failure
Common side effects
- Bradycardia
- Postural hypotension
- Skin rash
Counselling Points
- Monitor BP and heart rate
- Avoid upright position post-injection
- Gradual withdrawal recommended
Serious warnings
- Severe hepatotoxicity
- Risk of bradycardia with epinephrine
