Indication
Treatment of schizophrenia, mania in bipolar disorder, and conduct disorders in children.
Dosage (summary)
Start with 2 mg/day, may increase to 4-8 mg/day; elderly/renal/hepatic impairment: start 0.5 mg twice daily.

- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not established; avoid breastfeeding due to excretion in milk.

- CYP2D6 inhibitors
- CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Levodopa
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to risperidone
- Parkinson's disease
- Children under 5 years
Common side effects
- Parkinsonism
- Sedation
- Headache
- Insomnia
Counselling Points
- Monitor for sedation
- Avoid alcohol
- Report signs of CVAEs immediately
Serious warnings
- Increased mortality in elderly with dementia
- Cerebrovascular adverse events
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
