Indication

Used for petit mal, grand mal, and temporal lobe epilepsy.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: Start at 600 mg/day, increase by 200 mg every 3 days; max 2600 mg/day. Children: 20-50 mg/kg/day based on weight.

Special Populations

  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Avoid in pregnancy unless essential; teratogenic risk in first trimester.

Key Drug Interactions

  • May enhance sedative effects of barbiturates
  • Potentiates MAO inhibitors

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy
  • Hepatic dysfunction

  • Nausea
  • Tremor
  • Hair loss
