Indication
Management of hypertension, including hypertensive emergencies.
Dosage (summary)
Initial dose of 5 to 20 mg IV, may be repeated every 10 minutes as needed, with a maximum dose of 300 mg in 24 hours.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset of action is typically within 5 minutes; duration of effect is approximately 2 to 4 hours.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with hepatic impairment
- Patients with renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Labetalol is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
Key Drug Interactions
- Other antihypertensive agents may have additive effects.
- Caution with concurrent use of beta-blockers.
- May interact with drugs that affect hepatic metabolism.
Contraindications
- Asthma or severe bronchospastic disease
- Severe bradycardia
- Heart block greater than first degree
- Cardiogenic shock
- Decompensated heart failure

- Monitor blood pressure regularly during treatment.
- Inform healthcare provider of any history of asthma or heart conditions.

- Caution in patients with diabetes as it may mask hypoglycemia.
- Monitor for signs of liver dysfunction.
- Use with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions.
