Indication

Severe hypertension and controlled hypotension during anaesthesia.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: IV bolus 50 mg, max 200 mg; infusion 20 mg/hour, may increase.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset: 5 mins, Duration: 6-18 hours

Special Populations

  • Hepatic impairment
  • Renal impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use with caution; may affect fetus and is excreted in breast milk.

Key Drug Interactions

  • NSAIDs
  • Calcium antagonists
  • Adrenaline

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to labetalol
  • Asthma
  • Heart block
  • Uncompensated heart failure

Common side effects

  • Bradycardia
  • Postural hypotension
  • Skin rash

Counselling Points

  • Monitor BP and heart rate
  • Avoid upright position post-injection
  • Gradual withdrawal recommended

Serious warnings

  • Severe hepatotoxicity
  • Risk of bradycardia with epinephrine
