Indication
Treatment of mild to moderately severe infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 750 mg to 3 g daily in divided doses; max 6 g/day. Children: 20-50 mg/kg/day.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 1-2 hours, Duration: 6-8 hours
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Safety in pregnancy not established; may cause issues in breastfeeding infants.
Key Drug Interactions
- Probenecid increases blood levels
- May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
Common side effects
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Skin rashes
- Headache
Counselling Points
- Take with food to reduce GI upset
- Monitor for allergic reactions
- Complete full course of therapy
Serious warnings
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Risk of pseudomembranous colitis
