Indication
Management of anxiety disorders, preoperative sedation, and as an adjunct in the treatment of status epilepticus.
Dosage (summary)
Initial dose of 1-2 mg IV, may be repeated every 4-6 hours as needed, not to exceed 10 mg/day.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset of action is typically within 15-30 minutes; duration of effect is approximately 6-8 hours.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with hepatic impairment
- Patients with renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lorazepam is excreted in breast milk; caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.
Key Drug Interactions
- CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, opioids) may enhance sedative effects.
- CYP3A4 inhibitors may increase lorazepam levels.
- CYP3A4 inducers may decrease lorazepam levels.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to lorazepam or any component of the formulation.
- Severe respiratory insufficiency.
- Sleep apnea syndrome.

- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Ataxia
- Hypotension
Counselling Points
- Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking lorazepam.
- Do not abruptly discontinue use after prolonged therapy to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Inform healthcare provider if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Serious warnings
- Risk of dependence and withdrawal symptoms with prolonged use.
- Caution in patients with a history of substance abuse.
- May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
