Indication

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection, often in combination with other antiviral agents.

Dosage (summary)

The typical adult dosage is 800 to 1200 mg per day, divided into two or three doses, depending on the specific treatment regimen.

The onset of action may vary; however, clinical effects may be observed within 4 to 12 weeks of therapy initiation.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Ribavirin is contraindicated in pregnancy due to teratogenic effects. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 6 months after discontinuation. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

• Didanosine: Increased risk of didanosine toxicity.
• NRTIs: Potential for increased side effects when used with nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.
• Antacids: May reduce absorption of ribavirin.

Contraindications

• Pregnancy
• Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 50 mL/min)
• Autoimmune hepatitis
• Hemoglobinopathies (e.g., thalassemia, sickle cell anemia)
