Indication
Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults.
Dosage (summary)
50 mg to 100 mg taken orally at the onset of a migraine attack. A second dose may be taken after 2 hours if the migraine returns, but do not exceed 300 mg in a 24-hour period.
Onset of Action / Duration
Relief typically occurs within 30 minutes to 2 hours after administration.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Patients with hepatic impairment
- Patients with renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as it is not known if Sumatriptan is excreted in human milk.
Key Drug Interactions
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
- Concomitant use with other triptans or ergotamine-containing medications is contraindicated.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Sumatriptan or any of the excipients.
- History of ischemic heart disease, including myocardial infarction.
- Uncontrolled hypertension.
- Severe hepatic impairment.

- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Chest discomfort
- Flushing
- Somnolence
Counselling Points
- Instruct patients to take the medication at the first sign of a migraine.
- Advise patients not to exceed the recommended dosage.
- Inform patients about potential side effects and when to seek medical attention.
- Encourage patients to keep a migraine diary to track frequency and severity.
Serious warnings
- Risk of serotonin syndrome, especially when used with other serotonergic drugs.
- Caution in patients with a history of seizures.
- Monitor blood pressure in patients with a history of hypertension.
