Indication

Contraception for prevention of pregnancy.

Dosage (summary)

One intrauterine system (IUS) containing 52 mg of Levonorgestrel is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare professional. The device is effective for up to 5 years.

Onset of Action / Duration

Immediate contraceptive effect upon insertion.

Special Populations

• Women with a history of ectopic pregnancy
• Women with uterine abnormalities
• Women with active pelvic infections

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not indicated for use during pregnancy. Can be used during lactation; minimal amounts of Levonorgestrel are excreted in breast milk.

Key Drug Interactions

• Anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine) may reduce the effectiveness of Levonorgestrel.
• Rifampicin and other rifamycins may decrease the efficacy of the device.

Contraindications

• Pregnancy
• Current pelvic inflammatory disease
• Uterine or cervical cancer
• Unexplained vaginal bleeding
• Severe liver disease

• Amenorrhea

• Headache
• Nausea
• Breast tenderness
