Indication

Constipation and portal systemic encephalopathy.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 30 mL initially, then 15-30 mL maintenance. Children: 10-15 mL based on age.

Special Populations

  • Diabetics
  • Paediatric patients

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Negligible systemic exposure; safe during pregnancy and lactation.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Increases potassium loss with thiazides
  • Cardiac glycosides may have enhanced effects

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to lactulose
  • Galactosaemia
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction

Common side effects

  • Diarrhoea
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea

  • Report any severe abdominal pain
  • Avoid prolonged use without medical advice

  • Caution in lactose intolerance
