Indication
Constipation and portal systemic encephalopathy.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 30 mL initially, then 15-30 mL maintenance. Children: 10-15 mL based on age.
Special Populations
- Diabetics
- Paediatric patients
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Negligible systemic exposure; safe during pregnancy and lactation.
Key Drug Interactions
- Increases potassium loss with thiazides
- Cardiac glycosides may have enhanced effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to lactulose
- Galactosaemia
- Gastrointestinal obstruction

- Diarrhoea
- Flatulence
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea

- Avoid prolonged use without medical advice

- Caution in lactose intolerance
