Indication
Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in overweight patients.
Dosage (summary)
Start with 500 mg or 750 mg once daily with evening meal; max 2000 mg for 500 mg or 2250 mg for 750 mg.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Alcohol
- Iodinated contrast media
- NSAIDs
- Sulphonylureas
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metformin
- Children under 12
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Renal failure
- Hepatic insufficiency
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
Counselling Points
- Take with food
- Monitor blood glucose
- Avoid alcohol
- Report symptoms of lactic acidosis
Serious warnings
- Risk of lactic acidosis
- Monitor renal function
- Discontinue before surgery
