Indication

Dosage (summary)

2.5 mg or 5 mg orally twice daily depending on indication.

Special Populations

  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Elderly

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Not recommended during pregnancy; avoid breastfeeding.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Strong CYP3A4 and P-gp inhibitors
  • Strong CYP3A4 and P-gp inducers
  • Antiplatelet agents

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to apixaban
  • Active bleeding
  • Severe renal disease
  • Severe hepatic impairment

Common side effects

  • Haemorrhage
  • Contusion
  • Epistaxis
  • Haematoma

Counselling Points

  • Take with or without food
  • Monitor for signs of bleeding
  • Do not crush tablets unless necessary

Serious warnings

  • Risk of severe bleeding
  • Caution in patients with bleeding disorders
