Dosage (summary)
Initial: 400-800 mg IV; max 2500 mg/day.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
High teratogenic potential; contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Carbapenems decrease valproate levels
- Phenobarbitone increases valproate levels
- Oestrogen-containing medicines may decrease valproate efficacy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Pregnancy
- Active liver disease
- Urea cycle disorders
- Mitochondrial disorders
Common side effects
- Weight gain
- Tremor
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Somnolence
Counselling Points
- Use effective contraception during treatment
- Regular monitoring of liver function
- Report any signs of liver dysfunction immediately
Serious warnings
- Severe liver damage
- Pancreatitis
- Suicidal ideation
- Teratogenic effects
