Indication

Treatment of generalized and partial epilepsy, and mania in bipolar disorder.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 400-800 mg IV over 3-5 mins, max 2500 mg/day. Replace with oral therapy as soon as possible.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

High teratogenic risk; contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.

  • Phenobarbital
  • Lamotrigine
  • Oestrogen-containing products

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Active liver disease
  • Mitochondrial disorders
  • Urea cycle disorders

  • Diarrhea
  • Tremor
