Indication
Treatment of generalized and partial epilepsy.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: Start at 600 mg/day, increase by 200 mg every 3 days; max 2500 mg/day. Children: 20-35 mg/kg/day based on weight.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal insufficiency
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
High teratogenic potential; contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Increased sedation with phenobarbitone
- Decreased efficacy with carbapenems
- Increased toxicity with olanzapine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium valproate
- Pregnancy
- Active liver disease
- Urea cycle disorders

- Weight gain
