Indication
Treatment and prophylaxis of influenza in adults and children over 40 kg.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 1 tablet twice daily for 5 days; Prophylaxis: 1 tablet once daily for 10 days.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 30 mins, Duration: 6-8 hours
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
- Elderly
- Immunocompromised patients
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended in pregnancy; low levels in breastmilk; avoid breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Probenecid increases exposure
- Amoxicillin does not alter plasma levels
- Paracetamol does not alter plasma levels
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to oseltamivir or excipients
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Pain
Counselling Points
- Monitor for behavioral changes in children
- Take with or without food
- Report any severe side effects
Serious warnings
- Neuropsychiatric events reported, especially in children
- Not a substitute for influenza vaccination
