Indication

Dosage (summary)

Induction: 1.5-2.5 mg/kg; Maintenance: 4-12 mg/kg/h.

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment
  • Obesity

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contraindicated in pregnancy; avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours post-administration.

Key Drug Interactions

  • CNS depressants
  • Opioids
  • Benzodiazepines

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to propofol
  • Children <3 years
  • Severe cardiac failure

Common side effects

  • Hypotension
  • Transient apnoea
  • Nausea
  • Bradycardia

Counselling Points

  • Avoid driving for 12 hours
  • Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours
  • Monitor for respiratory depression.

  • Respiratory depression
