Indication
Treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: Start at 600 mg/day, increase to 1000-2000 mg/day. Children: 20-30 mg/kg/day.
Special Populations
- Elderly patients
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
High teratogenic potential; contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Key Drug Interactions
- Avoid with MAOIs, salicylates, and carbapenems.
- May increase effects of psychotropics.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to sodium valproate
- Pregnancy
- Liver disease
- Urea cycle disorders
Common side effects
- Weight gain
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Tremor
