Indication
Symptomatic treatment of seasonal and perennial rhinitis and pruritis.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 4-20 mg/day; start with 4 mg three times daily.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Children under 2 years
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Safety in pregnancy not established; contraindicated in nursing mothers.
Key Drug Interactions
- MAOIs may intensify anticholinergic effects
- Additive effects with CNS depressants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine
- Closed angle glaucoma
- Bladder neck obstruction
- Prostatic hypertrophy
- MAOI therapy
- Stenosing peptic ulcer
- Pyloroduodenal obstruction
Common side effects
- Drowsiness
- Somnolence
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth

- May cause drowsiness; avoid driving
- Monitor for sedation
- Report any adverse reactions
Serious warnings
- Risk of blood dyscrasias with prolonged use
- Caution in patients with asthma, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease
