Indication

Symptomatic treatment of seasonal and perennial rhinitis and pruritis.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: 4-20 mg/day; start with 4 mg three times daily.

Special Populations

  • Elderly
  • Children under 2 years

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Safety in pregnancy not established; contraindicated in nursing mothers.

Key Drug Interactions

  • MAOIs may intensify anticholinergic effects
  • Additive effects with CNS depressants

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine
  • Closed angle glaucoma
  • Bladder neck obstruction
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • MAOI therapy
  • Stenosing peptic ulcer
  • Pyloroduodenal obstruction

Common side effects

  • Drowsiness
  • Somnolence
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth

Counselling Points

  • May cause drowsiness; avoid driving
  • Monitor for sedation
  • Report any adverse reactions

Serious warnings

  • Risk of blood dyscrasias with prolonged use
  • Caution in patients with asthma, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease
