Indication
Oedema and essential hypertension.
Dosage (summary)
Adults: 12.5 mg to 200 mg daily for oedema; 12.5 mg daily for hypertension.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 2 hours, Duration: 12 hours

- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy (2nd/3rd trimester) or breastfeeding.

- Antidiabetic agents
- Lithium
- Corticosteroids
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to hydrochlorothiazide
- Anuria
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Addisonu2019s disease
Common side effects
- Hypokalaemia
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Photosensitivity
Counselling Points
- Take in the morning with food
- Monitor blood pressure and electrolytes
- Avoid sun exposure
Serious warnings
- Risk of electrolyte imbalance
- Potential for non-melanoma skin cancer
- Acute myopia and angle-closure glaucoma
