Indication

Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia; sedation of ventilated adult patients.

Dosage (summary)

Adults: Induction 1.5-2.5 mg/kg; Maintenance 4-12 mg/kg/h. Elderly: Reduced dose required.

Onset of Action / Duration

Onset: 30 secs, Duration: 6 hours (max infusion).

• Elderly patients
• Patients with hepatic impairment
• Patients with renal impairment
• Children under 3 years

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contraindicated in pregnancy; avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours post-administration.

Key Drug Interactions

• CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids)
• Rifampicin (may cause hypotension)
• Valproate (may require dose reduction)

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to propofol or excipients
• Soy allergy
• Children under 3 years
• Sedation in children with croup or epiglottitis

Common side effects

• Hypotension
• Bradycardia
• Transient apnoea
• Nausea and vomiting

Counselling Points

• Avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours
• Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours
• Monitor for signs of respiratory depression
