    Indication

    Short-acting intravenous general anaesthetic.

    Dosage (summary)

    Induction: 1.5-2.5 mg/kg; Maintenance: 4-12 mg/kg/h.

    Onset of Action / Duration

    Onset: 30 secs, Duration: varies.

    Special Populations

    • Elderly patients
    • Renal impairment
    • Hepatic impairment
    • Cardiac insufficiency

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    Contraindicated in pregnancy; avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours post-administration.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • CNS depressants (e.g., benzodiazepines, opioids)
    • Rifampicin
    • Valproate

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to propofol or excipients
    • Children < 3 years
    • Sedation in children < 16 years

    Common side effects

    • Hypotension
    • Bradycardia
    • Nausea
    • Transient apnoea

    Counselling Points

    • Avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.
    • Monitor for signs of respiratory depression.
    • Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours post-administration.

    Serious warnings

    • Respiratory depression
    • Propofol infusion syndrome
    • Anaphylactic reactions
