Indication
Treatment of infections caused by amoxicillin-resistant organisms.
Dosage (summary)
Children: 25-50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 hours.
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Caution in pregnancy; may cause sensitization in breastfed infants.
Key Drug Interactions
- May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
- Increased rash with allopurinol
- Methotrexate toxicity risk
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins
- History of amoxicillin/clavulanic-associated jaundice
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Counselling Points
- Take with food to reduce GI upset
- Monitor for allergic reactions
- Maintain hydration to prevent crystalluria
Serious warnings
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Risk of pseudomembranous colitis
