Indication

Infections caused by susceptible organisms.

Dosage (summary)

250 mg three times daily; 500 mg for severe infections.

Special Populations

  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use with caution in pregnancy; may cause sensitization in breastfed infants.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Probenecid
  • Allopurinol
  • Tetracyclines
  • Oral anticoagulants
  • Methotrexate
  • Oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin
  • Sensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins
  • Infectious mononucleosis

Common side effects

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash

Counselling Points

  • Report any allergic reactions
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake
  • Monitor for signs of colitis

Serious warnings

  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions
  • Convulsions in renal impairment
