Indication
Conscious sedation and induction/maintenance of anaesthesia.
Dosage (summary)
Adults <60 years: Initial 2.5 mg IV; Adults u226560 years: Initial 1.25 mg IV.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 2 mins, Duration: 1.5-2.5 hours
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
- Paediatrics
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Avoid in pregnancy; may cause neonatal respiratory depression. Not recommended during lactation.
Key Drug Interactions
- CYP3A inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole)
- CYP3A inducers (e.g., rifampicin)
- Alcohol and CNS depressants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to midazolam
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Respiratory insufficiency
- Myasthenia gravis
Common side effects
- Somnolence
- Respiratory depression
- Hypotension
- Amnesia
Counselling Points
- Do not drive or operate machinery for at least 12 hours post-administration.
- Monitor for signs of overdose.
- Inform about potential for dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
Serious warnings
- Risk of severe respiratory depression
- Use only with resuscitation facilities available
- Caution in high-risk patients
