Dosage (summary)
Adults: Start with 500 mg three times daily or 850 mg twice daily with meals; max 3000 mg/day.

Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Paediatric patients (12+ years)
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended in pregnancy; limited data in breastfeeding.
Key Drug Interactions
- Alcohol increases lactic acidosis risk
- Iodinated contrast agents require discontinuation
- NSAIDs may impair renal function
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metformin
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Severe renal failure
- Hepatic insufficiency
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite

- Take with meals to reduce GI side effects
- Monitor blood glucose regularly
- Report symptoms of lactic acidosis immediately

- Risk of lactic acidosis
- Monitor renal function regularly
- Discontinue in acute renal impairment
