    Indication

    Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

    Dosage (summary)

    Starting dose: 500 mg or 750 mg once daily with evening meal; max 2000 mg for 500 mg, 2250 mg for 750 mg.

    Special Populations

    • Elderly
    • Renal impairment

    Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

    Not recommended in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

    Key Drug Interactions

    • Alcohol
    • Iodinated contrast media
    • NSAIDs
    • Sulphonylureas

    Contraindications

    • Hypersensitivity to metformin
    • Children under 12
    • Acute metabolic acidosis
    • Renal failure
    • Hepatic insufficiency

    Common side effects

    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhoea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Loss of appetite

    • Take with food
    • Monitor blood glucose
    • Avoid alcohol
    • Report symptoms of lactic acidosis

    • Risk of lactic acidosis
