Start with 500 mg daily with evening meal; max 2000 mg once daily.

Not advised during pregnancy; excreted in breast milk.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to metformin
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Renal failure
- Heart failure
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite
Counselling Points
- Take with food
- Monitor blood glucose
- Report symptoms of lactic acidosis
Serious warnings
- Risk of lactic acidosis
- Monitor renal function
