Indication

Treatment of Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) and prevention of NSAID-related ulcers.

Dosage (summary)

20 mg once daily for maintenance; 40 mg once daily for erosive reflux treatment.

Onset: 1 hour, Duration: 24 hours

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment
  • Hepatic impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Safety not established during pregnancy and lactation.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Clopidogrel
  • Warfarin
  • Atazanavir
  • Nelfinavir

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole
  • Concomitant use with atazanavir or nelfinavir

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea

Counselling Points

  • Take tablets whole; do not chew or crush.
  • Monitor for gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • Avoid alcohol and NSAIDs.

Serious warnings

  • May mask gastric malignancy symptoms
  • Increased risk of gastrointestinal infections
