Indication
Short-term management of serious HIV infections; reduces maternal-foetal transmission in pregnancy.
Dosage (summary)
1.9 mg/kg every 4 hours (800 mg/day) for adults; adjust for haematological toxicity.
Special Populations
- Elderly
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Use in pregnancy to reduce HIV transmission; not recommended in first trimester.
Key Drug Interactions
- Stavudine (avoid combination)
- Clarithromycin (separate administration)
- Probenecid (increases zidovudine levels)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to zidovudine
- Low neutrophil count (<0.75 x 10^9/L)
- Low haemoglobin (<7.5 g/dL)

- Anaemia
- Neutropenia
- Nausea
- Dizziness

- Monitor for haematological toxicity
- Avoid breastfeeding
- Report any unusual symptoms immediately
Serious warnings
- Lactic acidosis risk
- Mitochondrial dysfunction
- Pancreatitis risk
