Indication
Essential hypertension and oedema.
Dosage (summary)
Start with 2.5 mg/day for hypertension; 5 mg/day for oedema, max 40 mg/day.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 1-2 hours, Duration: up to 12 hours
Special Populations
- Congestive heart failure
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Key Drug Interactions
- NSAIDs may reduce effect
- Potentiates digoxin toxicity
- Increased risk of dysrhythmias with antidysrhythmics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to torasemide
- Anuria
- Hepatic failure
- Hypovolaemia
- Hyponatraemia
- Severe micturition disorders
Common side effects
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Hypokalaemia
- Constipation
- Nausea
Counselling Points
- Take with or without food
- Monitor electrolyte levels
- Avoid alcohol
- Report signs of dehydration
Serious warnings
- Risk of electrolyte imbalance
- Monitor for hypotension
- Caution in elderly patients
