Indication

Dosage (summary)

Herpes Zoster: 1000 mg TID for 7 days; Recurrent Genital Herpes: 500 mg BID for 5 days.

  • Elderly
  • Renal impairment

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Safety not established; potential teratogenicity in rats.

Key Drug Interactions

  • Cimetidine
  • Probenecid

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to valaciclovir or aciclovir

Common side effects

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Counselling Points

  • Maintain hydration
  • Monitor renal function
  • Discontinue if CNS symptoms occur

Serious warnings

  • Risk of TTP/HUS
  • CNS adverse reactions
