Indication
Induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia.
Dosage (summary)
IV: 1-2 mg/kg; IM: 5-10 mg/kg, adjusted per patient.
Onset of Action / Duration
Onset: 30 secs (IV), 3-4 mins (IM); Duration: 5-10 mins (IV), 12-25 mins (IM).
Special Populations
- Renal impairment
- Hepatic impairment
- Children under 3 months
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not established; contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

- Halogenated anaesthetics

- Opioids
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ketamine
- Severe hypertension
- Eclampsia
- Cerebral trauma
Common side effects
- Hallucinations
- Hypertension
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Counselling Points
- Avoid driving for 24 hours
- Do not consume alcohol post-anesthesia
- Monitor for hallucinations
Serious warnings
- Respiratory depression
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Potential for abuse
